SEA NOW ORIGINAL · REAL LIFE IN THAILAND

After Years Living in Thailand, I Still Wonder: Why Do So Many People Think It Is Dangerous?

The Thailand I see online and the Thailand I have actually lived in can feel like two completely different places.

Real-life experience of living in Thailand
Original note: This article is based on the author's years of living in Thailand and personal observations. It does not mean Thailand has no crime, traffic, fraud or other risks, and readers should still maintain normal safety awareness.

01 | The Thailand I See Online and the Thailand I Actually Live In

After living in Thailand for several years, I often feel a strong disconnect between what I see online and what I experience in everyday life.

Online, Thailand is frequently discussed through words like “danger,” “scams,” “crime,” and “don’t go.” If you only consume that kind of content, it can begin to feel as if ordinary life here requires constant alertness.

My day-to-day reality has been very different. Most days are work, meals, convenience stores, traffic, malls, meeting friends, and going home. Sometimes the biggest problem of the day is Bangkok traffic — or simply deciding what to eat.

02 | What Made Me Stay Was the Feeling of Everyday Life

When I first came to Thailand, I focused on the same things most visitors do: attractions, food, malls and places to explore. The longer I stayed, the more I began to appreciate something less dramatic — ordinary life.

A coffee in the morning, a simple lunch, BTS or a taxi to work, a walk through a mall after work, and street food or dinner with friends at night. Thailand is not perfect, but daily life can feel unforced and comfortable.

It is not that every day is exciting. It is that an ordinary day can still feel good.

03 | I Like the Pace of Life Here — Not Because Life Has No Pressure

Work, rent, income and family responsibilities exist everywhere, and Thailand is no exception. What feels different to me is the level of social comparison.

In my own experience, there is often less pressure to prove that your life has to look a certain way. A normal neighborhood, a normal home and a normal routine can simply be enough.

That does not mean Thailand is carefree. It means I personally feel more room to live at my own pace.

04 | Safety: I Do Not Think Thailand Is Risk-Free

I would never say Thailand has no crime, scams, traffic risks or dangerous situations. No country can honestly promise that.

Crime is still crime, victims deserve help, and people who break the law should be held responsible. My point is narrower: the high-conflict stories that dominate social media are not the same thing as the everyday experience of every person living here.

Normal precautions still matter — knowing where you are going, protecting your belongings, avoiding illegal or high-risk situations, and keeping basic safety awareness.

05 | One of the Things I Value Most Is Thailand’s Inclusiveness

Thailand brings together people from many countries, cultures and lifestyles. In Bangkok especially, it is normal to see locals, long-term foreign residents, tourists, families, students and workers sharing the same spaces.

That diversity does not mean there are never misunderstandings. But in everyday life, I often feel that people have room to be themselves without constantly needing to explain how they live.

For me, that makes long-term life here easier.

06 | The Ordinary Days Are What Make a Life

The longer I live in Thailand, the less I feel the need to describe it as either “paradise” or “dangerous.”

It has problems. It has inconveniences. It also has warmth, convenience, good food, diverse communities and a pace of life that suits many people.

I do not think Thailand is right for everyone. But for me, as long as I work seriously, stay away from illegal and high-risk situations, keep basic safety awareness and live normally, it is a place where I can imagine continuing to build a life.

In the end, what really makes up life are all the ordinary days when nothing dramatic happens.
