For our fifth stop, the atmosphere changes completely.
We leave behind the old royal city, riverside trading quarters and narrow Chinatown streets.
And enter a Bangkok that many international visitors immediately recognize:
PATHUM WAN
Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, MBK, Siam Square, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and the Erawan Shrine are all found here or closely connected to this part of central Bangkok.
Many first-time visitors have already been to Pathum Wan—
even if they never realized the district had a name.
If Phra Nakhon represents one of the clearest windows into Bangkok’s past,
Pathum Wan shows us something very different:
Bangkok as a modern Asian metropolis.
01|Where Is Pathum Wan?
Pathum Wan lies in the heart of central Bangkok.
Some of the city’s best-known areas—including Siam, Chulalongkorn University and the Ratchaprasong commercial zone—are located here or immediately around it.
Today, this part of Bangkok is defined by dense public transportation, shopping centers, hotels, universities, restaurants, offices and pedestrian connections.
The BTS Sukhumvit and Silom lines meet at Siam Station, making the area one of Bangkok’s most important transportation hubs.
But the skyscrapers and giant shopping malls we see today were not always here.
As Bangkok gradually expanded eastward from its historic riverside center, areas such as Pathum Wan became increasingly important.
The center of Bangkok was no longer defined only by the Chao Phraya River and the Old Town.
A new modern city center was emerging.

02|Siam: Why Did This Become the Center of Modern Bangkok?
The most important word in Pathum Wan is probably:
SIAM
This is one of Bangkok’s busiest transportation, shopping and lifestyle districts.
Around Siam, you will find shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas, schools, cafés, fashion stores and some of the city’s largest concentrations of young people.
Every day, huge numbers of people come here to:
change BTS lines, shop, study, meet friends, eat and spend time in the city.
That is why Siam is more than a shopping destination.
It is almost a miniature version of modern Bangkok.
Stand near Siam BTS and look around.
Skytrains pass overhead.
Elevated walkways connect buildings.
Traffic moves beneath you.
Shopping centers rise on both sides.
Crowds flow constantly between stations, streets and malls.
This is one of the defining images of Bangkok today.

03|Siam Paragon × MBK: Two Completely Different Shopping Experiences
One of the most interesting things about Pathum Wan is how many different versions of Bangkok’s shopping culture exist within walking distance.
On one side:
Siam Paragon
International brands, premium restaurants, cinemas, entertainment and enormous modern retail spaces make it one of Bangkok’s best-known upscale shopping destinations.
Then walk only a short distance and you reach:
MBK Center
The atmosphere changes.
Electronics, clothing, accessories, souvenirs, smaller shops and more affordable shopping create a very different experience.
The two malls are close to each other.
Yet they represent two different sides of Bangkok’s consumer culture.
One is polished and premium.
The other is more casual, varied and accessible.
Together, they explain something important about Siam:
Bangkok’s shopping culture is not one single experience.

04|BACC: An Art Space Hidden Among the Shopping Malls
Across from MBK stands a building that some visitors walk past without entering:
Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
BACC
Inside, the atmosphere is completely different from the shopping malls outside.
BACC hosts contemporary art exhibitions, photography, design, cultural activities and other creative programs.
Its distinctive interior circulation takes visitors gradually upward through galleries and creative spaces.
What makes BACC especially interesting is its location.
Outside:
BTS trains, traffic, shopping malls and crowds.
Inside:
art, exhibitions and a noticeably slower rhythm.
After several hours of shopping, it can be the perfect place to change pace.
And it reveals another side of Pathum Wan:
the district is not only a commercial center—it is also one of the places where Bangkok’s contemporary creative culture becomes visible.

05|Chulalongkorn University: A Younger Bangkok in the City Center
Continue south from Siam and the atmosphere changes again.
Here we arrive at:
Chulalongkorn University
One of Thailand’s most prominent universities.
The campus and its surrounding neighborhoods form an important part of Pathum Wan’s identity.
Green spaces, academic buildings, students, cafés, restaurants and newer lifestyle developments create an environment very different from the giant shopping malls only a short distance away.
Around the university, you begin to see another version of Bangkok:
younger,
more relaxed,
more connected to student life.
Areas around Chulalongkorn have also developed into popular destinations for cafés, food and contemporary urban culture.
So when exploring Pathum Wan, do not stop at Siam.
Walk toward the university area.
You will discover a more everyday side of central Bangkok.

06|Erawan Shrine × Ratchaprasong: Where Faith Meets Modern Bangkok
Walk east from Siam and another famous part of central Bangkok appears:
Ratchaprasong
CentralWorld, hotels, office towers, shopping centers and elevated walkways dominate the surrounding streetscape.
Yet among all this modern architecture stands one of Bangkok’s best-known spiritual landmarks:
Erawan Shrine
This creates one of the city’s most striking contrasts.
Above you are elevated trains and walkways.
Around you are shopping malls and skyscrapers.
Traffic fills the intersection.
Tourists and office workers move through the streets.
And in the middle of it all, people stop to pray and make offerings.
Modernization did not simply erase traditional beliefs from Bangkok.
Instead, old and new continue to exist beside each other.
That contrast is one of the most fascinating characteristics of the city.

07|CentralWorld × Bangkok Skywalk: See the City from Above
There is another very modern way to experience Pathum Wan:
Walk above the streets.
Around Siam and Ratchaprasong, BTS stations, shopping centers and major intersections are connected by elevated pedestrian walkways.
Instead of constantly returning to street level, you can move through parts of central Bangkok above the traffic.
One of the best places to experience this is around:
CentralWorld
From the elevated walkways, the perspective changes.
BTS trains move through the city.
Traffic streams below.
Shopping malls and skyscrapers dominate the skyline.
Digital billboards glow across the buildings.
And as evening arrives, Bangkok begins to light up.
This experience feels completely different from the first four districts in our journey.
In Phra Nakhon, we walked through royal history.
In Bang Rak, we followed the river.
In Samphanthawong, we explored old commercial alleys.
Here in Pathum Wan,
we are walking through a modern Asian metropolis.

08|How to Spend One Day in Pathum Wan
Pathum Wan is one of the easiest districts in this series to explore.

09|Why Does Pathum Wan Deserve an Entire Day?
Because describing Pathum Wan simply as a “shopping district” misses much of what makes it interesting.
Within a relatively compact part of central Bangkok, you can experience:
Public transportation
Shopping
Contemporary art
University life
Youth culture
Traditional faith
Food
Modern urban life
And most importantly, all these elements overlap.
That makes Pathum Wan an excellent place to understand how Bangkok has evolved.
From the royal city of Phra Nakhon,
to the riverside trade of Bang Rak,
to the Chinese commercial streets of Samphanthawong,
our journey has gradually followed Bangkok’s transformation.
Now, in Pathum Wan, we arrive in the city center that defines much of Bangkok today.

NEXT STOP → 06 RATCHATHEWI
We do not need to travel far for our sixth stop.
Right next to the polished shopping world of Siam lies another side of central Bangkok:
RATCHATHEWI
Here we will find Pratunam Market, Victory Monument, Baiyoke’s skyline, busy transportation connections, hotels, wholesale fashion and dense street life.
If Pathum Wan represents the polished and highly modern face of central Bangkok,
Ratchathewi reveals something more hectic, practical and everyday.
It is a district shaped by movement.
People arrive.
People change buses and trains.
Tourists check into hotels.
Wholesale buyers search for clothes.
Office workers rush through intersections.
Street vendors serve customers throughout the day.
The atmosphere is less polished than Siam—
but in many ways, it feels even closer to the rhythm of everyday Bangkok.
