When people think of Bangkok today,
they often picture:
The Grand Palace.
Siam.
Sukhumvit.
Skyscrapers.
The BTS.
Huge shopping malls.
But travel further back in time,
and the story shifts to the other side of the Chao Phraya River.
This side of the river once played a major role in Siam’s history as a royal capital.
Rivers.
Canals.
Temples.
Markets.
Old communities.
Even today,
these elements continue to shape the character of Thon Buri.
This is:
Thon Buri
01|Cross the Chao Phraya into Another Bangkok
Travel west from central Bangkok,
cross the Chao Phraya River,
and the rhythm of the city begins to change.
Bangkok Center.
Chao Phraya River.
Thon Buri.
Old communities.
Canals.
Modern Bangkok has not disappeared,
but the city begins to feel lower, slower and more closely connected to neighborhood life.
Here,
the journey is not about finding more skyscrapers.
It is about discovering:
Where Bangkok came from.

02|After 1767: Why Did Thon Buri Become the Capital?
In 1767,
Ayutthaya fell.
Siam needed to establish a new political center.
King Taksin chose the western bank of the Chao Phraya as the site of the new capital.
Thon Buri had important geographical advantages.
It was located along the river.
It offered convenient transportation.
It connected with regional trade networks.
And it was closer to the Gulf of Siam than Ayutthaya.
Thon Buri therefore entered one of the most important periods in Siamese history.
Its time as the royal capital was relatively short,
but it created a bridge between:
The Ayutthaya era and the Bangkok era.

03|Why Did the River Determine the Location of the City?
Before modern roads and railways,
waterways were among the city’s most important transportation networks.
Boats carried people.
Boats carried food.
Boats carried goods.
Markets formed beside the water.
Temples were built along the river.
Homes stretched along the canals.
So if you want to understand old Thon Buri,
a modern road map is not enough.
What truly shaped this part of the city
was:
Water.

04|Canal Life in Thon Buri
Explore Thon Buri,
and you can still find an urban scale very different from central Bangkok.
Small canals.
Bridges.
Waterfront homes.
Wooden houses.
Temples.
Small piers.
Local residents.
In the past,
these waterways were important transportation routes.
Today,
they are increasingly part of neighborhood life and the city’s historical memory.
Modern Bangkok continues to move forward,
but the urban structure created by the waterways remains.

05|Why Are So Many Temples Located Beside the River?
In a traditional city,
a temple was more than a religious space.
It could also be closely connected with:
Community.
Education.
Festivals.
Piers.
Markets.
Everyday life.
That is why,
when traveling along Thon Buri’s rivers and canals,
temples often appear as important centers of community life.
Riverside temples such as Wat Kalayanamit
also reveal another layer of the district’s history.

06|Old Communities and Local Markets
History alone does not give Thon Buri its strong sense of everyday life.
Its neighborhoods are still active every day.
Breakfast stalls.
Fruit.
Prepared food.
Markets.
Small shops.
Students.
Older residents.
Office workers.

These ordinary scenes

07|Old Thon Buri VS Modern Bangkok
Stand on the western bank of the Chao Phraya,
and one of Bangkok’s most interesting contrasts becomes visible.
On one side:
Canals.
Low-rise homes.
Old communities.
Temples.
Traditional markets.
On the other:
High-rises.
The BTS.
Commercial centers.
Modern residences.
The city skyline.
These are not two completely separate cities.
They are different layers of time within the same Bangkok.

Because Thon Buri reveals that Bangkok’s story did not suddenly begin with today’s Grand Palace and Rattanakosin Island.
Across the river,
another important chapter remains.
This area once served as the royal capital.
The river once carried the city’s traffic.
Canals shaped its communities.
Temples connected local residents.
Markets sustained everyday life.
And even today,
these elements can still be found inside modern Bangkok.
What makes Thon Buri special is not one individual attraction.
It is the realization that:
**Beneath modern Bangkok, an older water-based city still survives.**
